CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

Everybody seems to want to make us feel guilty about Christmas Shopping these days. Rampant consumerism they say! We should grow our own, make our own, wrap things in homemade paper and cards. Give our family and friends "do good" kinds of presents - money for a goat in a faraway land, etc.

Why??? Life is pretty serious and earnest the rest of the year. What's wrong with some silliness, some prettiness, some cuteness, some wide-eyed "wonderness" at Christmas. Why do we have to be spoil sports to the current generation?

So I say go out and buy some plastic treasure which will break before New Year, some politically incorrect doll which "everyone else has" and some drinks and lollies which "will rot their teeth". Give them to your kids and grand kids and watch their little faces light up with joy. Loosen up guys!

THOUGHTS ON MOVING

IT'S DECEMBER ALREADY! WHERE DID THE LAST 3 MONTHS GO? MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE MOVED HOUSE - OR UNIT TO BE EXACT. I SWEAR EVERY TIME I MOVE IT WILL BE MY LAST BUT ..........
I WAS VERY GOOD THIS TIME I ACTUALLY THREW SOME THINGS OUT! MY UNIVERSITY NOTES - I'M A GRANDMOTHER SO YOU CAN GUESS HOW LONG I HAVE HAD THEM FOR. THE MINUTES OF EVERY CHILDCARE CENTRE, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH! OH YES FOLKS I HAVE BEEN RUTHLESS.
NOW IF I COULD JUST BRING MYSELF TO DO SOMETHING WITH ALL THE KIDS PARAPHERNALIA - KINDY DRAWINGS AND THE LIKE. AS THERE ARE 5 CHILDREN AND THE YOUNGEST IS 31 I THINK THE TIME HAS COME!

WHAT ABOUT ME?

Calling all "invisible" Grandmothers. When did people stop seeing us? There we were making decisions, organizing our families' lives, making a contribution when suddenly no one could see us any more.
I am 5'10" but I can stand at a counter while the world is served around me and nobody even sees me. I can be in a group and make a comment and wonder if I've lost my voice because nobody hears me. Half the surveys don't even have a space for my age group and date of birth.
Men as they get older get "elder statesmen" status - they can make the most stupid observations and just get a kindly, tolerant smile. Women just become "invisible".
Grandmothers! We need a revolution. We demand to be noticed!
What about me! It isn't fair!

NATURE VERSUS NURTURE

MANY YEARS AGO WHEN UNDERTAKING AN ARTS DEGREE AT SYDNEY UNIVERSITY MAJORING IN PSYCHOLOGY AND ECONOMICS, I HANDED IN AN ESSAY IN MY PSYCHOLOGY CLASS ARGUING THE CASE AS TO WHICH SHAPED A PERSON MOST - HEREDITY OR ENVIRONMENT. AS AN "OH SO WISE" SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD MY ESSAY CAME OUT STRONGLY ON THE SIDE OF THE ENVIRONMENT, I.E. NURTURE!
NOW AS A MOTHER OF FIVE, GRANDMOTHER OF SIX I WOULD WRITE A VERY DIFFERENT ESSAY!
OUR YOUNG ONES ARE BORN SUCH INDIVIDUALS - WE AS PARENTS JUST GO ALONG FOR THE RIDE!

I WEAR MANY HATS

Today I am wearing my Grandmother hat. This weekend I attended the 1st birthday party of my youngest grandchild, Henry. Just a family affair but with 5 adult children and their partners and kids we make quite a crowd. My daughter served simple beautiful food she had made herself and, in a small sunny back garden in Tempe in Sydney, the world seemed pretty good. I counted my blessings.

A TRUE STORY

For 5 of the longest minutes of my life I lost sight of my 4 year old grand daughter last week. We were in the crowded food court of a large shopping centre and she wanted to go to the loo. I turned to pick up my handbag from the table, reached for her hand and she was gone. She was nowhere to be seen. Five minutes later she walked up to me, smiling happily probably wondering why I looked so upset! As she is inclined to tall stories I have no idea where she went and I never will.

It reminded me of the time over 35 years ago when my own daughter went missing from a family outing and when we found her she protested "I wasn't lost Mum - you were!"

Which only proves that "the more things change the more they remain the same"
or that I should not be trusted to mind children! Pat

GOOD DAD - BAD DAD

The other day in the shop a Dad came in looking for a costume to hire for his little girl for Book Week. She tried on lots of costumes and liked each one. Dad, however, remained worried that they were not finding the right one.

Finally he narrowed it down to two and asked one of my staff members
"If you were judging the competition, which one would you make the winner?" Hey Dad - it's Book Week not the Oscars!
